The Department of Geography announces the publication of a series of seventeen maps that examine ethnic diversity in metropolitan Montreal. Nothing can be taken for granted about ethnicity in Montreal and these maps attempt to represent different aspects of a vibrant, if often contested, social environment. We have mapped the residential distribution of fifteen of the largest ethnic groups living in the Montreal census metropolitan area in 1991: British, French, Aboriginal, Irish, Italian, Jewish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Polish, South Asian, Black, Portuguese, Greek, Spanish and Lebanese.
To give clarity to the notion of ethnic diversity in Montreal, we created two types of maps.
- The first type attempts to demonstrate the different ways in which the ethnic groups are distributed across the Montreal CMA. These fifteen black and white maps (11 x 17 in.) present the distribution of each ethnic group across the districts of the CMA based on an index of concentration.
- The second map type comprises two colour maps (11 x 17 in.) and in different ways each attempts to represent the ethnic composition of the district.
To construct an image of the CMA's cultural diversity, the first of these two maps depict the third largest ethnnic group in each district. The second colour map focuses on the ethnnic composition of each neighbourhood in the Montreal Urban Community (Montreal Island) - the most densely populated and oldest part of the CMA.
